Blue Rocks Nova Scotia
Blue Rocks is a small, weathered fishing village just outside Lunenburg, known for its jumble of colorful wooden boats, worn docks, and ancient glacially smoothed rock outcroppings that give the community its name. The interplay of lobster traps, weathered shacks, and reflections in the still harbor water makes nearly every corner a ready composition. Shoot from the road that winds along the shoreline, working the low rocky ledges to get your camera close to the water and use reflections to double the boats and structures above. A wide to standard zoom, around 24-70mm, handles most situations well, though a longer lens lets you compress the layered boats and buildings nicely. Early morning is ideal, when mist often sits on the water and the light is soft and cool; overcast days also work beautifully here, keeping contrast low and colors rich. The road is narrow, so park considerately and walk to find your angles. (Blue Rocks, Nova Scotia, Canada)
