Bourton-on-the-Water

Bourton-on-the-Water - Photo by David Lally1 / 1

Standing in the heart of the Cotswolds, this village earns its nickname "the Venice of the Cotswolds" through a series of low stone bridges arching over the River Windrush as it flows gently through the village center. The honey-colored limestone buildings lining the banks give every frame a warm, unified palette that works especially well in golden hour light. Shoot from the bridges looking upstream or downstream to use the river as a natural leading line, or wade into the shallow grass banks to get a low angle that brings the water and architecture together in the same frame. A wide to standard focal length, around 24 to 50mm, handles most compositions well. Morning visits are strongly recommended; the village fills with tourists by mid-morning, so arriving early gives you cleaner shots without crowds. Overcast days soften the light and reduce harsh shadows on the stone facades. (Bourton-on-the-Water, Gloucestershire, England)
