Stow on the Wold

Stow on the Wold - Photo by David Lally1 / 1

Stow on the Wold is a hilltop Cotswolds market town built almost entirely from warm honey-coloured limestone, giving you a cohesive, timeless palette that works beautifully in almost any light. The Market Square is the obvious starting point, where you can frame the old stocks and St Edward's Church against the surrounding townhouses, or use the open square to capture the sweep of the architecture. One of the most photographed spots in town is the ancient north door of St Edward's Church, flanked by two yew trees whose gnarled roots frame the doorway in a way that feels almost otherworldly. Shoot this doorway in soft, overcast light to avoid harsh shadows in the recesses. Early morning is ideal throughout town, before traffic and visitors arrive, when mist sometimes settles between the buildings and adds real atmosphere. A 24-50mm range covers most compositions here comfortably. Street parking is available around the square. (Stow on the Wold, Gloucestershire, England)
