Buntzen Lake is a stunning reservoir nestled in the mountains northeast of Vancouver, surrounded by dense coastal forest with the jagged peaks of the Indian Arm highlands reflected perfectly in the calm water. The lake rewards photographers who arrive early, when morning mist often lingers on the surface and the light filters softly through the trees. Head to the north beach for clean foreground reflections, or walk a short stretch of the trail to find compositions that frame the peaks behind the lake through overhanging branches. A wide-angle lens works well for capturing the full sweep of mountains and water, while a longer focal length pulls in the ridgeline details. Overcast days are surprisingly productive here, softening shadows and saturating the greens. Parking fills quickly on weekends, so arrive before 8am to guarantee a spot and beat the crowds.
