Calstock Viaduct is a striking Edwardian railway viaduct that towers over a tight bend in the River Tamar, its twelve elegant arches reflected in the water below when conditions are calm. The most rewarding compositions come from the riverside at Calstock village, where you can frame the full span of the viaduct with the wooded hillside behind it and the river in the foreground. A wide to standard zoom in the 24-70mm range works well here. Early morning light hits the structure beautifully, reducing haze and giving the pale concrete a warm glow, while overcast days soften shadows and bring out the detail in the arches. You can access the riverbank easily from the village, and low tide exposes mudflats that add texture and mirror-like reflections to your foreground. Walking slightly downstream gives you a slight angle that shows the curve of the viaduct more dynamically. (Calstock, Cornwall, England)
