The Windy Post Cross is famous spot with an ancient granite post that has stood on this spot for hundreds of years. It was originally erected as a marker on the old ecclesiastic branch track of the Abbot’s Way. The cross has slowly tilted because for generations it has been used as a rubbing post by Dartmoor livestock. It blends sympathetically into the landscape. Sitting up on the hilltop means you can pair the cross all along against the sky or pair it with a view over the valley. The Grimstone and Sortridge Leat runs right past the base, so you can add the moving water as a unique foreground. Mist and low cloud pour through this gap in the hills on a damp overcast day, and the cross will give you a moody vibe against grey moving sky. The whole area is easily accessible with parking at Pork Hill on the B3357 and an easy to follow trail. The open moor is easy to explore with ponies and cattle everywhere. After shooting the cross you can continue along the trail to Pew Tor. (Whitchurch Common, Devon, England)
