Cathédrale de Monaco

Cathédrale de Monaco is the seat of the archdiocese and sits with an incredible view looking out over the bay. Built in 1875, it is quite eye catching with it's white limestone, rounded arches and intricate carvings taking up most of rue Colonel Bellando de Castro. Inside is breathtaking with soaring columns that are polished red and blue-grey stone, the high altar is white Carrara marble, and a gold mosaic fills the half dome above the choir. An altarpiece by Louis Bréa from around 1500 hangs off the transept. The Grimaldi tombs run behind the altar, Rainier III and Grace among them, and there is usually a line to visit that corner, so patience helps. Below the building the Jardins Saint-Martin look out over the bay, and the paths there give you a lower angle back up at the Cathedral. It is free to access the interior but be aware that services take priority over visitors. Go early to avoid the crowds both inside and in the square in front of the Cathedral. (Monaco-Ville, Monaco)
