The Gateway to Rock Overlook sits on the north edge of Monaco's old town along rue des Remparts as it climbs up the hillside. This small pause on the climb gives you an incredible view as the heart of Monaco spreads out in front of you. Port Hercule fills the foreground, Monte-Carlo climbs the far shore, and the mountains close off the back, so you get three distinct layers unfolding in front of you. A long lens compresses them into something dense and graphic. A wider shots will need some careful framing because trees crowd both edges so you will need to experiment a bit with working through the gap between them. Evening is the best time of day to aim for, when the sun comes across from the left and spreads light down the buildings. Storm light is fun here too, since the clouds will sits low on the mountains while the port stays bright underneath. A stone parapet runs along the edge and gives you something solid to brace against. Late morning gets busy, because the walking route onto the Rock passes right through but there is lots of space to set up along the rampart edge for clear views. (Monaco-Ville, Monaco)
