Champlain Monument Lighthouse
The Champlain Monument Lighthouse is a slender, column-style lighthouse topped with a working light, standing at the edge of Lake Champlain with open water views and the distant Green Mountains of Vermont as a backdrop. The combination of the ornate stone column, the surrounding historic fortification ruins, and the wide lake makes this a layered scene worth exploring. Shoot from low angles to emphasize the monument's height against the sky, or pull back to incorporate the shoreline and reflections on calm water. The site truly shines at night, when the working light adds a real glow to long exposures, and the dark surroundings make it one of the better spots in the region for astrophotography. A wide angle lens works well for both landscape compositions and star shots. The area is open and easy to walk around, with parking nearby at Crown Point State Historic Site.
