Chilehaus is an exceptional example of the 1920s Brick Expressionism style of architecture built to resemble a ship. It symbolizes Hamburg's economic recovery after World War I and became one of the city's flagship buildings, along with St Michael's Church. In addition to its enormous size and unusual shape, the building is particularly impressive for its richly detailed brick façades. It was built using irregularly fired clinker bricks, whose appearance changes with the time of day and weather conditions, thus giving the building a varied appearance. (Hamburg, Germany)
