St. Nicholas' Church is historic Gothic Revival church that was once the tallest building in the world (from 1874 to 1876). The bombing of Hamburg in World War II destroyed the bulk of the church leaving only the spire standing. It has been left in it's bombed condition, except for structural reinforcements and the addition of an elevator to a viewing platform, to serve as a memorial and an important architectural landmark.
