About Clachan Sands
Clachan Sands is a beautiful stretch of white sand sitting along the north coast of North Uist, out along the road toward the Berneray causeway. The beach is surrounded by machair, the flowery grassland that fills this whole coastline, and adds amazing colours in early summer. Berneray and the hills of Harris sit photogenically on the horizon to the north. Lingeigh, a small island offshore, connects to the beach with a strip of sand on very low tides so if you are lucky you may be able to add it to your shooting day. Make sure to check the tide tables first and keep an eye on the water levels as you shoot if you venture over there. This stretch of coastline faces north, so the Northern Lights often comes up over the water, and dark skies make the Milky Way fun to experiment with too. Although skip midsummer for astrophotography because the sky never fully darkens from late May into July. Historic burial grounds sit along the road in, walled in stone with unmarked croft stones inside. The turn off from the B893 is signed for the Clachan Sands Camping Area and there is a grassy parking area at the camp site you can use while exploring the beach.
