About Sgarasta Beach

Sgarasta Beach is a beautiful stretch of white sand along the west coast of South Dunes and flowery machair separate it from the main road. Ceapabhal rises at the far end on its own little peninsula. This beach is fun to capture because you can face two different directions, and come away with two completely different pictures. Face northeast up the beach and the North Harris mountains make the perfect background. Turn to the southwest and Ceapabhal fills it instead. Open Atlantic sits in front, so there is usually surf along the shoreline, making it a good spot to experiment with adding movement to your compositions. Plus you can climb a little way up Maodal for a view over the whole beach. At the south end the sand runs into the flats at Traigh an Taobh Tuath. Late evening light in summer is the ideal time to be here. If you come early or late, you will likely have it to yourself. (Scarista, Isle of Harris, Scotland)
