Built in 1879, this stunning Victorian greenhouse is one of San Francisco's most photogenic landmarks, combining ornate white-painted wood and glass architecture with lush tropical interiors. Outside, the symmetrical facade with its curved wings and central dome gives you strong architectural compositions, especially when you include the formal garden beds and fountain in the foreground. A wide angle lens works well for capturing the full structure, while a short telephoto lets you isolate the intricate detailing. Overcast days are ideal since the soft, diffused light that San Francisco regularly provides eliminates harsh shadows on the white exterior and reduces glare on the glass panels. Inside, you will find dramatic tropical plants, lily ponds, and hanging orchids that reward macro and close-up work. Note that tripods and free-standing equipment are not permitted inside, and certain shoots require a permit; check conservatoryofflowers.org before you go.
