The desert dunes east of Dubai offer sweeping, ridgeline compositions where the interplay of light and shadow transforms the sand into graphic, almost abstract landscapes. The dunes here roll continuously into the distance, occasionally broken by hardy desert shrubs that give scale and texture to your frames. Shoot from the crest of a ridge looking down the windward face for strong leading lines, or drop low and use a foreground plant to anchor a wider scene. Golden hour is essential, as the low sun rakes across the sand and carves out deep shadows that reveal every ripple and contour. Sunrise tends to be quieter and cooler, with softer gradients in the sky. A medium telephoto lens works well for compressing the layers of dunes, while a wide angle captures the full sense of scale. Wear closed shoes and expect soft ground that makes moving between dunes slow. (Dubai, United Arab Emirates)
