Église de la Visitation de la Bienheureuse-Vierge-Marie
This stone church is the oldest on the island of Montreal, and its age shows in the best possible way. The pale limestone facade, fieldstone walls, and classic Quebec religious architecture give you a subject that holds up in almost any light. Shoot from across the small yard to capture the full facade with its symmetrical towers, or move in close to isolate the carved stonework and weathered details with a 50mm or short telephoto. Overcast days are particularly flattering here, softening shadows and bringing out the texture in the stone without harsh contrast. Winter visits are rewarding when snow frames the building against a grey sky. The surrounding historic cemetery adds depth to wider compositions and is worth exploring for detail shots as well. Street parking is generally available nearby, and the grounds are easy to walk around. (Montreal, Quebec, Canada)
