Exchange District Condos
The Exchange District is a cluster of high-rise condo towers next to Square One in downtown Mississauga, and the reason to point a camera at it is the architecture. The rectangular blocks stick out and alternate orientation every six floors, giving the towers a stacked, offset look that reads almost like loose Jenga blocks. The tallest, EX3, climbs to roughly 232 metres and is the most dramatic of the group. Shoot from across City Centre Drive or from the open ground at Celebration Square, where you have enough distance to fit a full tower in frame and clean sightlines without too much foreground clutter. A low angle exaggerates the overhangs and makes the blocks feel like they are sliding apart, while a longer lens from further back compresses the towers together and stacks them against the neighbouring buildings, including the curving Absolute towers visible to the side. The strong horizontal banding and sharp tonal separation between the pale soffits and darker glass make this an easy subject for black and white. Flat overcast light suits the graphic, geometric shapes and keeps the white concrete from blowing out, while clear evenings work too once the cantilever undersides are lit. Note that the district is still being built out, so expect cranes and active construction on site, which can either intrude or add to the frame depending on how you compose. Parking and transit are straightforward given the Square One location. (Mississauga, Ontario, Canada)
