Farine Five Roses Sign Viewpoint

Farine Five Roses Sign Viewpoint - Photo by Shawn M. Kent1 / 1

The Farine Five Roses neon sign is one of Montreal's most beloved landmarks, mounted on a former flour mill along the Saint Lawrence River in Pointe-Saint-Charles. The sign glows in pink neon and reads "Five Roses" today, a remnant of mid-century industrial Montreal that has become an icon of the city's skyline. Your best shots come from the Old Port side of the river or from the Jacques Cartier Bridge, where you can frame the sign against the downtown skyline or capture its reflection in the water below. Blue hour and dusk are ideal, when the neon pops against a deep blue sky and the surrounding buildings begin to light up. A 24-70mm or 70-200mm lens gives you flexibility depending on how close you position yourself. Shooting from the Peel Basin area also offers strong foreground interest with boats and industrial texture. (Montreal, Quebec, Canada)
