Farine Five Roses Sign Viewpoint

Farine Five Roses Sign Viewpoint - Photo by Shawn M. Kent1 / 1

The Farine Five Roses sign is one of Montreal's most iconic landmarks, a glowing neon relic from 1948 perched atop a former flour mill along the St. Lawrence River. The best viewpoint is from the Entrée de Ville Bonaventure park, an unusual green space wedged between the lanes of the Bonaventure Expressway, which puts you at a useful elevation and distance to frame the sign cleanly. Shoot at blue hour or after dark when the red neon pops against the sky, or arrive at dusk to catch the sign illuminated with color in the clouds behind it. A mid-range zoom around 50-85mm works well to isolate the sign without distortion. The park is free and accessible on foot, and the sculptures and architectural layering around you offer secondary compositions worth exploring while you wait for the light.
