Built in the late 1850s, this rare octagonal Victorian home on Russian Hill is one of only three surviving octagon houses in San Francisco, and its unusual eight-sided geometry makes it a genuinely distinctive architectural subject. Position yourself across Green Street to capture the full facade, where the angled corners and period detailing reward a slightly longer focal length, something in the 50-85mm range, to compress the perspective and isolate the structure from street clutter. Overcast days work well here since soft, even light brings out the texture of the exterior without harsh shadows cutting across the angles. Early morning on a clear day can give you clean light before traffic and parked cars become a distraction. The surrounding trees and streetscape add context, so try framing with some foreground greenery to give the shot a sense of place rather than shooting it in isolation. Street parking on Green Street puts you right where you need to be. (San Francisco, California, United States)
