Fort Miley Military Reservation

Perched on the coastal bluffs at the western edge of San Francisco, Fort Miley offers dramatic views of the Pacific Ocean, the Marin Headlands, and the outer Golden Gate where the bay meets the open sea. The crumbling concrete bunkers and gun emplacements give you strong geometric foreground elements to pair with sweeping ocean backdrops, and the weathered textures of old military infrastructure photograph well up close with a wide angle lens. Walk the bluff edges to find compositions that layer the historic structures against the horizon, or drop lower on the trails for angles that put the Pacific behind the ruins. Fog rolls through frequently, which can add atmosphere and mystery to your shots rather than ruin them. Morning light hits the western-facing bluffs softly, and overcast days often work better here than harsh sun. Parking is available at the Louis A.
