Gokokuji Temple Entrance
One of Tokyo's few remaining Edo-period temples, Gokokuji offers a rare combination of weathered wooden architecture, stone lanterns, and a towering Niomon gate that frames the approach beautifully. Start at the base of the stone staircase leading up to the main hall, where the steps, flanked by lanterns and greenery, create a strong natural leading line pulling the eye toward the main structure. A wide-angle lens works well here for capturing the full gate and staircase in context, while a short telephoto lets you compress the details of the ornate roof brackets and aged timber. Early morning gives you soft, even light and minimal crowds, making it ideal for clean architectural shots. In autumn, the surrounding trees add color that contrasts warmly against the dark wood and grey stone. The temple is a short walk from Gokokuji Station on the Yurakucho Line, making access straightforward. (Bunkyo City, Tokyo, Japan)
