Greenbelt Trail

Greenbelt Trail - Photo by Shawn M. Kent1 / 1

The Greenbelt Trail leading to Mer Bleue bog gives you access to one of the most unique natural landscapes near Ottawa, where a raised peat bog stretches out beneath open skies with a boardwalk cutting through low-lying shrubs, Labrador tea, and gnarled black spruce. The elevated boardwalk is your best compositional tool, offering strong leading lines that draw the eye deep into the bog; shoot low to emphasize the wooden planks against the wide, flat expanse. Early morning is ideal when mist often sits over the bog and the light is soft and directional, though golden hour in autumn turns the sphagnum moss and shrubs into rich amber and red tones worth planning around. A wide-angle lens works well for the sweeping bog views, while a short telephoto helps isolate the twisted spruce silhouettes. Parking at NCC Greenbelt lot P21 off Anderson Road makes access straightforward. (Ottawa, Ontario, Canada)
