Mer Bleue Bend in the Road
This roadside bend cuts through a canopy of mixed forest just outside Ottawa, making it one of the more accessible fall colour locations in the region. The curve of the road itself is the key compositional element here; position yourself low and use the road as a leading line drawing the eye into a tunnel of autumn foliage overhead. A wide angle lens works well to emphasize the canopy closing in from both sides, while a longer focal length can compress the colours and isolate patches of intense reds and oranges. Overcast days are actually ideal here, as the diffused light brings out the richness of the fall tones without harsh shadows cutting through the trees. Midday on a cloudy day can be just as rewarding as golden hour. The road sees regular traffic, so be mindful of your positioning and use any quiet moments between cars to get a clean shot.
