Habitat 67

Habitat 67 - Photo by Shawn M. Kent1 / 1

Habitat 67 is one of the most iconic pieces of modernist architecture in North America, a stacked concrete residential complex made up of 354 interlocking modular units that creates an endlessly geometric, almost sculptural skyline along the St. Lawrence River. The repeating cubes, terraces, and bold shadows give you strong abstract compositions; look for patterns, rhythmic lines, and the interplay of light across the brutalist surfaces throughout the day. Overcast light works surprisingly well here by reducing harsh shadows and revealing texture, though golden hour adds warmth to the raw concrete and creates dramatic contrast. A wide-angle or mid-range zoom lens lets you capture the full mass of the structure or isolate individual sections. You can shoot from the waterfront promenade for a broad establishing view, or walk closer to find tighter geometric abstractions. Parking is available nearby, and the exterior is freely accessible year-round. (Montreal, Quebec, Canada)
