St Anthony's Chapel Ruins
Perched on a volcanic crag above St Margaret's Loch in Holyrood Park, these roofless medieval ruins offer one of Edinburgh's most dramatic foreground subjects, with the city sprawling behind them and Arthur's Seat rising to the southwest. Shoot from the loch's northern bank to frame the chapel reflected in the water with the crag above, or climb up to the ruins themselves and use the jagged archways to frame views toward Leith and the Firth of Forth. The path up is short but steep, so wear decent shoes. A wide angle lens handles the scale well, while a longer focal length pulls the city in tightly behind the stonework. The golden hour before sunset is particularly rewarding when warm light catches the weathered stone, and overcast days give the ruins a suitably moody atmosphere that suits their skeletal silhouette.
