Immanuel Presbyterian Church
This grand Gothic Revival church on Wilshire Boulevard is a striking architectural subject, with its ornate stone facade, pointed arches, and tower rising above the surrounding streetscape. The front elevation facing Wilshire gives you a strong symmetrical composition, and stepping back far enough to include the full tower requires a wide angle lens in the 16 to 24mm range. Early morning light hits the west-facing facade with a soft, diffused quality that avoids harsh shadows in the carved stonework, while overcast days are ideal for bringing out the detail and texture in the stone without blown highlights. The surrounding Koreatown context adds an interesting environmental element if you pull back for wider establishing shots. Street parking is available along the side streets, and the sidewalk directly across Wilshire gives you the best straight-on perspective for a clean architectural shot.
