Joe Indian Pond Falls

Joe Indian Pond Falls - Photo by Terry Branham1 / 1

Joe Indian Pond Falls is a series of small cascading drops along a rocky stretch of river that feeds into Joe Indian Pond in the Adirondacks, offering intimate waterfall photography without the crowds of more well-known spots. The cascades work best when you get low and close, using the layered rock shelves and rushing water as foreground interest while the surrounding forest fills the frame. A wide angle lens lets you capture the full sequence of drops, while a mid-range focal length isolates individual chutes with more compression. Overcast days are ideal here since the soft diffused light eliminates harsh shadows in the tight woodland setting and helps bring out the texture of the wet rocks. A slow shutter speed will smooth the water into silky streaks; bring a tripod and a polarizing filter to cut glare on the surface. Parking is simple along Joe Indian Road and the falls are just steps from the roadside. (Parishville, New York, United States)
