Kedungu Beach

Kedungu Beach is a peaceful, little gem on Bali's southwest coast in Belalang village, a short drive up the shore from Tanah Lot. The sand here is black and the beach becomes quite wide at low tide. Fishing boats often land on it, so there are usually crews and boats dotting the sand in the morning. The coastline faces southwest and the sun drops over open water, making the sunsets here incredible. Since the wet black sand holds a reflection well, you can get low and close to the waterline as the tide pulls back to experiment with sunset reflections. The rolling surf attracts surfers of various levels so if you are lucky you may be able to capture their silhouettes against the rich orange light. There's faster waves and surf on the left in front of the cliff at the end of the beach if you want to play around with a bit more shape in your compositions. There's no admission fees, but expect a small parking charge, and facilities are basic. Villas and restaurants are going up fast around here, so the surroundings change season to season. Mornings are quiet if you want the beach to yourself, but sunset brings the most dynamic light. (Tabanan, Bali, Indonesia)
