Munggu Beach is a wide stretch of black volcanic sand in Munggu village, about fifteen minutes up the coast from Canggu. The sand is dark grey to nearly black, and the beach is broad enough that people can spread right out even on a busy evening. This stretch of coastline faces west so during sunset the sun drops down into the open water, and low light on wet black sand turns the whole beach into a dark mirror as each wave pulls back. Aim to arrive about a half an hour before the sun touches the horizon so you have lots of time to experiment with the reflections. As a bonus the rolling surf here is consistent and often sizeable, so there are usually surfers dotting the horizon waiting for just the right moment. A long lens brings them in tight against the swell. Drop to a slow shutter and you get the opposite, the waterline is smoothed to flat grey with the texture of the sand adding rich detail. The current runs hard along this section of the coast, so keep an eye on it and be careful if you go in. (Munggu, Bali, Indonesia)
