Kölnbrein Dam
Kölnbrein Dam and the Kölnbreinspeicher Reservoir form Austria’s tallest dam and one of the most spectacular high alpine photography locations in the Hohe Tauern National Park. Towering above the Maltatal Valley, the massive curved dam wall contrasts beautifully with the deep blue reservoir and the surrounding peaks, creating powerful compositions for landscape and architectural photographers alike. The famous “Airwalk” viewing platform extends over the dam’s edge, offering dramatic perspectives and vertigo-inducing shots, while calm days provide mirror like reflections of the Ankogel Group in the reservoir. Accessible via the scenic Malta High Alpine Road (toll road), the site is easiest to reach from late spring through autumn when the road is open. Sunrise and late afternoon light enhance the textures of the concrete structure and the rugged mountain backdrop, making Kölnbrein an unforgettable alpine shooting location.
