Lake Algonquin HydroElectric
The Lake Algonquin Hydroelectric Dam sits along the Sacandaga River in the Adirondacks, where controlled water releases create dramatic cascades that shift in character depending on season, rainfall, and dam output. When flows are high, the spillway churns with powerful white water that rewards a slower shutter speed to capture silky motion blur; when levels drop, the exposed rocks and calmer channels offer a more structured, layered composition. Position yourself on or near the bridge to shoot directly into the falls with the surrounding forested hillsides framing the scene, or move to the banks for lower angles that emphasize the rush of water in the foreground. Overcast days are ideal here, softening harsh contrasts and making the whites of the water pop without blowing out. A wide to mid-range zoom works well, and a polarizing filter helps cut glare on the water. Parking is accessible nearby and the walk to the dam is short. (Wells, New York, United States)
