Lyon’s Falls on Black River

Lyon's Falls is a wide, powerful cascade on the Black River in the small mill town of the same name, made visually interesting by the industrial remnants scattered throughout the scene. Rusted dam infrastructure, old lock walls, and submerged stone foundations give you foreground texture that most waterfall locations simply do not have. Shoot from the rocky outcroppings near water level to include these elements in your composition, or pull back for a wider frame that captures the full breadth of the falls alongside the historic millwork on the opposite bank. Overcast days are ideal, softening the white water and reducing contrast on the wet rocks. A wide angle lens in the 16 to 24mm range works well up close, while a mid-range zoom lets you isolate the falls from the far bank. Parking is right beside the falls, and reaching the rocks requires only a short, careful scramble. (Lyons Falls, New York, United States)
