Pixley Falls
Pixley Falls drops 50 feet over a dramatic basalt rock face in the quiet forests of Pixley Falls State Park, making it one of the more striking natural features in central New York. A short, well-maintained trail leads you directly to the base, where you can shoot straight on to capture the full height of the cascade against the dark, mossy rock wall. Wide angles work well here to include the surrounding foliage, while a telephoto lets you isolate texture and water detail. Overcast days are ideal since the forest canopy can create harsh contrast in direct sun, and the soft diffused light brings out the greens and wet rock tones beautifully. A slow shutter speed will smooth the water nicely, so bring a tripod. You can also position yourself to one side for a more dynamic angle on the flow.
