Nicks Lake
Nicks Lake is a quiet, forest-rimmed lake in the Adirondacks where the ban on motorized boats keeps the surface glassy and ideal for reflection photography. The small sandy beach at the campground gives you an open foreground to work with, and you can frame the treeline doubling perfectly in still water, especially in early morning before any wind picks up. The loop trail around the lake opens up additional compositions through the trees, with filtered light and intimate woodland perspectives. Sunrise is the prime window here, when mist often sits on the water and the light is soft and directional. A wide angle lens works well for capturing the full reflection, while a telephoto lets you compress the forested shoreline. Note that the beach access is through Nicks Lake Campground and a day use fee may apply if you are not staying overnight. (Old Forge, New York, United States)
