Maihaugen is one of Northern Europe's largest open-air museums, spreading across a hillside in Lillehammer with over 200 historic buildings spanning centuries of Norwegian life. The Garmo stave church, dating to the 1200s, is a standout subject with its dark timber construction and layered roofline; position yourself low and slightly to the side to emphasize its dramatic silhouette against the sky. The traditional farm clusters and mountain cabins offer strong compositional opportunities using pathways and fences as leading lines between buildings. Overcast days work particularly well here, softening the light across the weathered wood textures and reducing harsh shadows in the narrow spaces between structures. A 24-70mm lens covers most situations, though a wider angle helps inside the stave church if access allows. The grounds are walkable but hilly, so comfortable footwear is worth noting when carrying gear. (Lillehammer, Innlandet, Norway)
