MAK - Museum of Applied Arts
The MAK's facade along Stubenring is one of Vienna's finest examples of Historicist architecture, with its arcaded loggia, ornate terra cotta detailing, and rhythmic arched windows offering strong compositional material for architectural photographers. Shoot from across the Stubenring to capture the full symmetry of the building, or move in close to isolate the decorative relief work and column capitals with a longer lens. Overcast days work particularly well here, as diffused light brings out the texture and detail without harsh shadows cutting across the facade. Early morning on weekdays means minimal pedestrian traffic, making clean exterior shots much easier to achieve. Inside, the permanent collection rooms feature beautifully lit display cases and ornate ceilings worth photographing; a wide angle lens in the 16 to 24mm range handles both the expansive interiors and the street facade well.
