Maniniholo Dry Cave
Maniniholo Dry Cave sits just off the highway on Kauai's North Shore, a large sea cave carved into the cliff face that draws photographers with its dramatic arched entrance and striking contrast between the dark interior and the bright tropical foliage outside. The most effective composition frames the cave mouth from just outside, using the wide arch as a natural frame around the lush greenery beyond. Shooting from inside looking out gives you a strong silhouette effect, especially on overcast days when the diffused light softens the exterior without blowing out the highlights. Midday works surprisingly well here since the cave itself is shaded and the even light outside reduces harsh contrast. A wide angle lens in the 16 to 24mm range lets you capture the full height and depth of the entrance. The cave is roadside with no hike required, making it one of the most accessible geological features on the North Shore. (Ha'ena, Kauai, Hawaii, United States)
