Massey Music Hall
Massey Hall is an incredible concert venue that dates back to 1894 and was designated a National Historic Site in 1981. It was a gift to the city from industrialist Hart Massey. The exterior is red brick with a Palladian style front that sits flush to the sidewalk. The red and black colour scheme on the outside was actually added in the 1930s. The front entrance is immediately eye catching with its' red doors, neon sign, and carved stone sign that still reads "Massey Music Hall" from the original name. A major renovation completed in 2021 added the Allied Music Centre, a seven storey glass and corrugated aluminum tower tucked into the narrow gap between Massey Hall and the neighbouring Elgin and Winter Garden Theatre. Suspended glass walkways now connect the old and new buildings over the sidewalks on both sides. The walkway over Victoria Street is especially photogenic because it frames the original brick exterior behind glass. Inside, the auditorium is decorated in a Moorish Revival style inspired by the Alhambra in Spain. The lobby has Art Deco detailing and a diamond pattern marble terrazzo floor from the 1933 renovation. Nearly 100 original stained glass windows were restored over the years. Interior access depends on events and programming, but the exterior and the contrast between the heritage building and the modern addition give you plenty to shoot from the street.
