Mokolea Point
Mokolea Point is a rugged lava headland on Kauai's north shore, jutting into the ocean where crashing surf, jet-black rock, and vivid turquoise water create powerful natural compositions. The jagged lava formations and blowholes make for strong foreground interest, and you can frame wide shots looking back toward the green cliffs of the Kilauea coastline or shoot directly out to sea for dramatic wave action. A wide-angle lens works well here for capturing the full sweep of the rocky bench against open ocean, while a telephoto lets you isolate texture in the lava and compress the layered cliffs behind. Morning light is ideal, with the sun rising over the water and casting warm tones across the dark rock. Wear sturdy shoes since the lava surface is uneven and sharp, stay well back from wave wash on exposed sections, and visit in summer when calmer seas make the tidepool area more safely accessible.
