The Monolith is the towering centerpiece of Vigeland Sculpture Park, a 14-meter granite column of 121 intertwined human figures that draws the eye upward with remarkable sculptural intensity. Shoot from ground level looking straight up the column to compress the figures into an abstract, layered composition, or step back to include the surrounding raised platform and the radiating staircase for a sense of scale. The column sits on an elevated circular plaza, so you can circle it completely and find strong angles with the sky as your backdrop. Overcast days work beautifully here, giving you even diffused light that brings out the texture and detail in the carved figures without harsh shadows. A wide-angle lens lets you exaggerate the height from close range, while a short telephoto isolates individual figure groups. The park is free, open year-round, and easy to reach by tram.
