Montreal City Hall is a striking Second Empire building in Old Montreal, with a symmetrical stone facade, ornate mansard roof, and rows of arched windows that reward careful architectural photography. Shooting from across Rue Notre-Dame gives you the classic straight-on composition, while stepping to either side lets you work the corner angles and capture the depth of the facade. A longer lens, around 70 to 135mm, helps compress the details and isolate the roofline against the sky. Overcast days are ideal for even light across the pale stone, but golden hour adds warmth and reduces harsh shadows in the window recesses. The building is also beautifully lit at night, making it worth returning after dark for a cleaner, more dramatic shot. The wide sidewalk in front gives you room to frame without obstruction, and the nearby Champ-de-Mars park offers elevated angles looking down toward the building. (Montreal, Quebec, Canada)
