Notre-Dame-de-Bon-Secours Chapel

Notre-Dame-de-Bon-Secours Chapel - Photo by Shawn M. Kent1 / 1

Built in 1771, this intimate stone chapel in Old Montreal is one of the city's oldest and most photogenic religious buildings, standing in sharp contrast to the surrounding historic streetscape. The facade photographs beautifully with a slightly low angle to emphasize the tower and lantern rising above the roofline, and a 24-35mm lens works well for keeping the full structure in frame while including some foreground cobblestone. Blue hour and early evening are the best times to shoot, when the warm interior and exterior lighting glow against a deep blue sky, giving you that ideal balance between ambient light and artificial illumination. The chapel sits right along Rue Saint-Paul, so shooting from across the street or from a slight diagonal gives you depth and context. Weekday evenings tend to be quieter, with fewer pedestrians interrupting your frame. (Montreal, Quebec, Canada)
