Nelson’s Collumn
Place Jacques-Cartier is one of Old Montreal's most lively public squares, and Nelson's Column anchors the upper end of it with a clear sightline down toward the St. Lawrence River. The column itself is a narrow, vertical subject, so a wide-angle lens helps you include both the monument and the surrounding historic stone buildings that frame it on either side. Try shooting from the lower end of the sloping square and using the cobblestone plaza and street activity as foreground interest, with the column rising against the sky. You can also move in close at the base and shoot upward for a dramatic low-angle perspective that emphasizes its height. Overcast days soften the light and reduce harsh shadows on the stonework, though golden hour adds warm tones to the surrounding facades. The square is pedestrian-friendly and easy to navigate, though it gets crowded midday in warmer months. (Montreal, Quebec, Canada)
