Moose Falls is a compact but powerful 30-foot plunge waterfall tucked near the south entrance of Yellowstone, making it one of the easiest waterfalls in the park to reach without a long hike. The falls drop in a single clean curtain into a rocky pool surrounded by dense forest, giving you a classic intimate waterfall scene rather than a grand overlook. Position yourself low and close to emphasize the height of the drop, or step back to include the surrounding conifers for a sense of place. A wide to standard zoom in the 16-50mm range works well here. Overcast days are ideal since the forest canopy already creates uneven light, and a polarizing filter will help cut glare on the water and bring out the greens. Bring a tripod for slow shutter exposures that smooth out the falling water. The short walk from the parking area is paved and accessible for most visitors.
