National Gallery of Canada
Designed by Moshe Safdie, the National Gallery of Canada is one of Ottawa's most striking pieces of architecture, with its glass and granite facade offering strong geometric compositions against the sky. The Great Hall's soaring glass ceiling is one of the best interior shots in the city, especially on overcast days when the diffused light eliminates harsh shadows and brings out the structural details. From outside, position yourself to frame the tower of the Centre Block or the Notre-Dame Cathedral Basilica alongside the building's angular glass forms. A wide-angle lens works well both inside and out, and the grand staircase and rotunda reward careful vertical compositions. The surrounding plaza gives you enough distance to capture the full exterior, while early morning visits mean fewer crowds and cleaner shots of the interior spaces.
