Niagara Trestle
This decommissioned railway trestle spans a dramatic forested canyon on Vancouver Island, offering a striking combination of weathered steel and timber framing set against dense Pacific Northwest greenery. The bridge itself becomes your primary subject and your shooting platform at the same time; walk out onto the open ties to frame the canyon below through the gaps, or shoot back toward the tree line for a strong symmetrical composition using the rail structure as a leading line. The approach trail also gives you angles from below if you can work your way down the slope, where the stone abutments and full span read well against the sky. Overcast days are ideal here since the forest canopy and deep canyon create harsh contrasts in direct sun. A wide angle lens handles the structure well, and a 35mm works nicely for tighter compositions. Wear sturdy footwear and step carefully on the open ties, as there are no railings.
