Niagara Trestle

Niagara Trestle - Photo by Shawn M. Kent1 / 1

This abandoned railway trestle spans the narrow Niagara Canyon on Vancouver Island, offering a dramatic combination of weathered steel, mossy stonework, and a plunging forested gorge below. The structure itself makes a strong graphic subject, so try shooting from the canyon rim to capture the full span with the creek visible far below, using the receding steel girders as a natural leading line into the frame. A wide angle lens works well for showing the scale of the stone abutments against the surrounding forest, while a longer focal length lets you compress the trestle from a distance for a more dramatic perspective. Overcast days are ideal here since the forest canopy and canyon walls create harsh shadows in direct sun; soft grey light brings out the texture in the weathered steel and mossy stone. Wear solid footwear as the trail involves some uneven terrain, and exercise real caution if you step onto the bridge itself. (Leechtown, Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada)
