The Old Flamborough Lighthouse is an octagonal chalk tower that is described as England's oldest surviving lighthouse. It was built as a light tower in 1669 by Sir John Clayton but he went bankrupt soon after it was completed. It was designed for a coal or wood fire to be burned on its top, however it is not clear whether it was ever actually used.
