Old Power Station
This decommissioned power station sits along the Niagara River on the Canadian side, just upstream from the falls, and its massive industrial facade makes for a compelling architectural subject. The building's stone and brick construction has real character, with arched windows and a hulking presence that rewards wide to mid-range focal lengths. At night it becomes particularly striking, as colored lights wash across the exterior as part of an ongoing light show, giving you vivid long-exposure opportunities with the river in the foreground. Position yourself along the riverbank path to combine the illuminated building with water reflections and moving current for added depth. A tripod is essential after dark, and experimenting with exposures in the 10 to 30 second range will help you balance the artificial lighting against the sky. The area is accessible on foot from the main tourist corridor and easy to reach year-round. (Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada)
